SURGICAL ONCOLOGY
Surgical oncology is a field in which the surgeon removes tumours or masses to improve your condition. Meticulous planning with the help of imaging modalities like CT, MRI and mammograms help to prepare us for the operation. When possible, biopsies help us to tell which tumour types are present (Malignant/Benign) and how responsive these tumours are to chemo and radiotherapy. Tumour removal can be complex, the tumour is removed with surrounding normal tissue to decrease the risk of local recurrence. Lymph node removal helps us identify micro metastases. After surgery the General Surgeon cares for the wound. Tissue results are explained in full to the patient and all treatment options are discussed. Patient education and care walk hand in hand to ensure that all the parties involved can plan. The Surgeon works closely with oncologists to ensure that the patient gets the most well-rounded approach to care.
